I have recently been reading the Star Ocean: Till the End of Tima manga online, and I gotta say - it's pretty amazing.
Many people say that animes or mangas that are made as spinoffs of games (or vice-versa) are usually not very good. I don't know about the others, but the Star Ocean manga - which was made after the game - does not fall into this same stereotype.
The only problems I've had so far are minor changes. For example, the kingdom of Aquaria is now known as "Seaharts", and Albel is known as "Arbel" (though that may be a simple translation error).
So far, everything has lined up with the game very well. A few minor differences, but nothing plot-changing. There's a lot of comic relief in random places, but that makes it even better, because who doesn't love to laugh every now and then? There are also short "mini-stories" at the end of each volume (so far, that's been every 4 chapters). These stories have nothing to do with the main plot, but are just there to be interesting - and funny. Not really a big difference - and I find them very enjoyable.
Bottom line is, don't let stereotypes keep you from checking something out, because you just might miss out on something awesome.
