The original new super Mario bros. which debuted on the Nintendo Ds was a phenomenal success. Having raked in millions of sales, it contested with big hitters like Mario Kart Ds. The concept was simple: recreate Mario bros. as if it was created today. What seemed like a simple 2.5-d side scroller-platformer turned out to have rich game play which was accentuated by its easy to learn/hard to master controls.
A few years later we are re-introduced to the masterpiece on the wii. can it live up to it's predecessor?
EotW is widely know for how much we hate standard reviews, so lets just cover the good and the bad:
The GOOD:
Simple controls are the backbone of this game. evry action can be condensed to two buttons and the motion support. Mario was meant to be played with a D-pad, so the side ways wiimote is the way to go. you can plug in the nun chuck if you want, but sadly the game requires motion, so the classic/GC controllers are out. not that you need them. The horizontal Wiimote is far and away the best tool for the job.
The Graphics took a big leap from the DS to the wii, naturally, and everything looks like Mario's world should bright and vivid colors, along with imaginative level and character design make this one good looking game. The game even has tiny little Easter eggs thrown into the mix, like enemies and background reacting to the music. It's all tastefully done.
There isn't a single theme in this game that isn't catchy. The sound track is filled with so many great song, which I believe will be the classic Mario songs of the next generation. No it's not all orchestrated like in Galaxy, but not only does it not need to be, but it's so good you wont care! To accompany the music are both new and classic sound effects like, the one-up jingle, and the chime from collecting a coin. Tons of little fan services for the Mario fans of yesterday, and today.
Now this might be a bit controversial so It'll be on the bad list as well: The difficulty has been vamped up for this version, and it's very noticeable. It keeps the flow of the game running at break neck speeds, and that's a very good thing.(Sometimes) You will rarely find the levels easy, and if you do, your most likely doing it wrong. (I heart you propeller helmet) Still you'll rarly want to stop playing, even after an epic losing streak. The game is too fun!
One of the "biggest features" in new super mario bros. is it's local multi-player component. It's definitely a riot to play but if you're the type who likes to play games alone, or even likes to take turns, the multi-player is only and option. It's not necessarily to have fun. Still you may want to play with a friend once or twice, just because it's so different from playing by yourself; It's like a whole another game.
The other function that the game has built in, is an auto pilot for beginners. die 8 times on any given stage and the game will allow you to set the controller to the side and let the computer show you show it's done. While I'm sure core gamers are foaming at the mouth at the concept (I know I was) it truly is a great addition for those who didn't spend ever second of their childhood saving peach from bowser. no one will notice if you try it by yourself, gamers.
The BAD:
It's truly hard to find wrong with such a right. The game is immaculate. Still there are definatly a few bumps in this otherwise smooth game, so lets take a look:
Mario is known for his ability to jump to insane heights, despite his girth, and his ten year old spirit. There isn't a job too dirty for Mario. He even manages to spout a "yahoo!" while saving his love interest from certain death. That takes character. But it seems as though Mario is growing tired from saving peach ump-teen million times, and has gotten less enthusiastic about it. For what ever reason, Mario sound so... un cheerfull. He's not miserable mind you, he just doesn't have the same giddy-up that he used to.This really Doesn't pull from the game, it's just something I picked up right away.
And here returns the difficulty. At times the game's coming at you with everything its got, and you're just trying to get to that flag. Unfortunately some of the hazards don't leave any room for error, and that can get a bit frustrating. You make even a half a second's mistake on some levels, and it'll send Mario back out side the course. Still it's also what makes the game worth playing, and satisfying when it's completed.
And that's about it. The game definitely caters to the "Hard-Core" mario fans, but is approachable for those who have waited to play a standard Mario side scroller. I give this game the Official EOTW seal of approval as well as a big thumbs up.
But what do you think?
Thumbs up? Meh... Or Thumbs Down?
