I cried for the first time in eleven years

Posted by Nate D. on December 4, 2009 at 10:00 PM

I can honestly say that the last time I've cried was when my grandmother passed away eleven years ago. Not to say I'm a manly guy by any means. I've simply never been much of a crier. That was until 9:45pm when I witnessed the final episode of Monk wrap up.  Crying may not be the correct term here. "Misty eyed", or even "tearing up", might be better. Still, It was emotional.

Fans of the Monk series are sure to know that Monk's purpose for carrying on, is to find the man who killed his wife; Trudy. Season after season the pieces slowly come together, and in some episodes (most likely to remind viewers of the underlying plot) breakthroughs were made, reveling even more characters and plot twists. Still in every episode, despite the case, monk would draw strength from his memories of Trudy to carry on. Carrying on of course, being harder for monk than most folk, due to the constant roadblocks that are set in his path like: germs, heights, bugs, garbage, birds, fast cars, reptiles, trucks, cell phones, uneven numbers, the internet, women, and even milk.

These quirks, which would seem annoying in any real life situation, help the viewer get attached to monk, and in some cases, even relate to him. When monk over comes, even some of the littlest of fears, you feel an overwhelming sense of pride, and accomplishment. Couple that with a cast of characters, like Monk's care taker: Natalie Teegar, and one of monks only "friends" captain Leeland Stottlemyer, and you have a show worth tivo-ing.

I've seen a few shows come to an end, but this was by far the most satisfying conclusion to ANY television show I've ever witnessed, and I only watched monk casually. I even missed the first half of the episode!Monk is that good. Unfortunately it's a bit more touching than funny in the later seasons, (Which is when I started watching monk) so it took some re-runs for me to enjoy the plot. you can't just drop in half way and expect to know everything. Still anyone can enjoy Monk, and I did for a very long time.

Now I don't want to spoil anything so I'll just recommend you watch it. Just be ready for some quick wrap ups, and deus ex machina characters to randomly appear. Other than that it's all good.

One of my friends is an avid Monk fan. It would break his heart to hear that the last season of monk was coming to an end. I heard that it's an amazing show, so thank you for reminding me of it - I'm going to have to watch it online, sometime.
