Review: Netflix on 3DS

Posted by Nate D. on July 15, 2011 at 5:24 PM

I've all but cut cable television from my life entirely, replaced with Neflix and Hulu Plus. At E3 2010, Nintendo gave consumers a whole new reason to pick up a 3DS over an Iphone: Netflix, with glasses free 3D. Yesterday the app was launched, and while it's 3D programming is missing for the time being, it's nothing short of amazing.

People who subscribe to Netflix's streaming service, ($7.99 a month) can enjoy the app for free, so long as they still have devices left to tie to their accounts. Once downloaded, it can be selected from the 3DS' menu like any other game. Once launched, you will be asked to register your device to your account, you can select from any of the available streaming TV shows and movies and begin viewing.

Videos load every bit as quickly as they do on home consoles. The 3DS bottom screen acts as your remote: you can tap once to pause, and bring up other options like fast forwarding/rewinding, and returing to the menu. the interface is very similar to that of the Wii's, with dragable progress markers and big clickable buttons. You know something works when you don't have to think to use it. I was on and watching an episode of Lie to Me in a matter of seconds. It's also not taxing on your 3DS' battery, which should last well over 5  or 6 hours.

The picture quality is crystal clear and every bit as good as using an Ipod or other device. What really impressed however was how clear the sound was. Every show and movie on Netflix is available and because of how it works, you can start watching something on your TV or computer, stop in the middle, and continue it on your 3DS if you go somewhere else with an internet hotspot.

This one is a no brainer for Netflix subscribers, don't let this pass you by.
